Friday, July 31, 2009
Roster Announced for Team Canada East Evaluation Camp in Renfrew, OntarioThe Canadian Junior Hockey League, in partnership with Hockey Canada, announced today the evaluation camp roster for Team Canada East in preparation for the 2009 World Junior A Challenge. The evaluation camp is the first of three camps for Team Canada East and will take place at the Mat-Te-Way Arena in Renfrew, Ontario on August 15th, 2009.
The one-day evaluation camp, hosted by the Central Junior Hockey League (CJHL), will include 21 players from the CJHL, 22 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League players and 21 players from the Ligue de Hockey Junior AAA du Quebec. In total, three games will be played between the participating players, starting at 1:00 PM.:
- 1:00 PM CJHL vs. NOJHL
- 4:15 PM NOJHL vs. QJAAAHL
- 7:45 PM QJAAAHL vs. CJHL
(See Rosters Below)
Prior to the evaluation camp, the Central Junior Hockey League will also host an inter-squad game at the Mat-Te-Way Arena in Renfrew, Ontario at 8:00 PM on Friday, August 14th. The game will be open to the public for a $2 admission charge.
Team Canada East will hold three separate evaluation camps for the five eastern CJHL leagues (OJHL, NOJHL, CJHL, LHJAAAQ, MJAHL). The second camp will be hosted by the Ontario Hockey Association on August 22nd in Richmond Hill, Ontario (OJHL players) and a final camp hosted by the Halifax Lions will be held on August 23rd (MJAHL players). Details and rosters of the remaining two camps will be available shortly.
"The Evaluation Camps throughout Eastern Canada provide a great opportunity for our Staff to view over 100 players and at the same time helps us to promote the World Junior A Challenge and Team Canada East," stated Team Canada East General Manager Marty Abrams.
Team Canada East has announced the appointment of Jack Ferguson to the position of Head Scout. Ferguson was formerly the Director of OHL Central Scouting. His significant contributions to the Ontario Hockey League resulted in the Jack Ferguson Trophy, an award presented to the player selected first overall in the OHL Priority Selection Draft. Ferguson was also a scout for the Washington Capitals and has a great deal of experience in the East. Jack Ferguson's ability to evaluate players will be an amazing resource in helping General Manager Marty Abrams and Coach Todd Gill assemble Team Canada East this coming season.
Todd Gill will lead Team Canada East as Head Coach. Gill played parts of 19 NHL seasons with seven teams and now serves as owner and Head Coach of the CJHL's Brockville Braves. Assistant Coach Patrice Bosch of the Inouk de Granby (LJHAAAQ) won bronze with the 2008 team in Camrose in the same role, while General Manager Marty Abrams of the OJHL's Wellington Dukes makes his fourth appearance in as many years - his third as GM after serving as an assistant coach at the first tournament in 2006 in Yorkton, SK. James Richmond of the OJHL's Georgetown Raiders will serve as the other Assistant Coach.
Summerside, P.E.I. will host the 2009 World Junior A Challenge from November 1st - 8th, 2009 at Credit Union Centre. The 2009 World Junior A Challenge will follow the same format as previous years - two Canadian entries will be joined by four international teams. Team Canada East captured the bronze medal in 2008, the first time in three years that the team failed to reach the gold medal game.
